I bought a used boat two years ago that came with a pretty busted up 48 quart Igloo Marine cooler on board. Since the cooler came with a seat-top cushion, I replaced it with, I thought, an identical new one so that I could make use of the cushion. Before I threw out the old cooler, I harvested the handles, hinges, straps and screws from it, thinking they might come in handy. I'm glad I did, because the hinges on the new cooler both separated over this past weekend after less than two years of pretty minimal and gentle use. I dug out the stuff I had taken off the old cooler and a comparison of the old and new hinges is very enlightening. The old hinges are actual two-part HINGES, cast in hard white plastic. The new hinges are simply rectangles of soft white plastic with a horizontal crease in them. They work by bending back and forth along the crease as you open and close the lid of the cooler. Of course, they fail pretty quickly. How could they not? No one at Igloo could have thought for a moment that these things were going to last any time at all. The Igloo site invites you to upgrade to their premium stainless steel hinges at 14.99 a pair and "take your cooler to the next level". You know what? I would just have liked to have bought a cooler that was designed to last, not exactly the opposite. Not impressed Igloo, not impressed at all.
