Before I bought the Aegis Compact, I tried out the ESS ICE NARO (previously reviewed) and found them to be a quality pair of shooting glasses, albeit too large for my small face/head. Since Smith provides a hat size range for the Aegis (really appreciated), I was able to make the proper decision in buying their compact model. Unlike the ESS ICE pair, the Aegis does not include a second frame. This isn't much of an issue though, because the Smith Aegis frame sports a dual piv-lock that makes swapping lenses super easy and stress-free. When changing lenses is this easy, you don't mind having only one frame. Regarding the quality of the lenses, they are all perfectly clear, and the two not attached to the frame can always be stored in their own separate microfiber sacks. All the components ship within a large semi-rigid zip-case (pictured) that has an internal mesh flap for storing the included retention strap and anti-fog cloth. On the outside it has two belt loop snaps for attaching to a 1.5" belt(perhaps 1.75"), however the loops are positioned as such, that the zippered opening would be facing downwards. I'm not really sure why that is, because if you opened the case whilst on your belt, the contents would surely fall out. Alternatively though I suppose you could snap it onto a row of Molle webbing on a pack, or use its plastic snap hook for clipping to a ring. Though the case is large enough that it would flop around a lot if carried in this fashion. When I bring my glasses to the indoor range, I just put in the clear lenses and put the pair in a smaller case inside my range bag.The Aegis really is perfect for the range too. It's single shield lense is large enough to cover your face without looking rediculously huge, and provides great field of view. The top of the frame hugs your brow without applying pressure, and the nosepiece for me is the ideal width and sits just right, never bothering me. The whole set is very comfortable, though it doesn't grab onto my head all that tight. If I tried hard enough I could maybe shake it off my head, but in high activity situations I could just use the retention strap - that's why it's there, and I'm glad Smith included it. Though the Aegis is a bit more expensive than the comparable ESS ICE, I do think it's warranted. I wouldn't say the ESS is lower quality - it's not. However, it has fewer features and just didn't look right on me. If possible, I obviously recommend you check out both of these in person, but either way both are a definite step up from those tempting <15$ cheapo shooting glasses we all have numerous pairs of. If you're willing to spend 100$+ on shooting glasses, and are looking for a smaller pair like I was, alternatively check out the Oakley M Frame with the Sweep or Hybrid S lenses. They look great (probably my favorite aesthetically), but they are expensive for what you get - just the frame, one lense, and an Oakley soft case/bag. Also, the standard M frames are not true ballistic lenses, so are not rated at the same level of impact protection as the ESS and Smith pairs. Optically, they're all great, but considering the purpose I had in mind, I'm happy with the Smiths.
