Garmin Dakota 10 Review

I'd heard great reviews about the Dakota; my one concern was whether the "10" version - which doesn't offer SD card expansion - would have enough memory. It's proved to have plenty enough memory for my purposes, including storing topo maps for three states and several dozen geocache descriptions.

The touchscreen is reasonably responsive - you won't mistake it for an iPhone or Android, but it's probably more waterproof than them as well - and the controls are logically laid out. I did have one day in which I somehow managed to lock the screen and couldn't figure out how to unlock it until I got home, but that's been my only episode of confusion.

Garmin provides some good software and web resources for its product line. It's a little bit confusing - why do there need to be three different Mac applications just to add maps and view them? - but once you get the hang of it, it works well.

You can buy Garmin topo maps but you don't need to: there are many free online topo maps that work just great - just do an online search. I'm not that tech savvy and with a little finagling I was able to download free topo maps that are great, although they don't show trails so I need to import them elsewhere.

I really like the geocaching feature. Usually I use my iPhone for geocaching, but the Garmin is more accurate and can be used when cellphone service is unavailable. All in all, I have no real complaints about this unit. I "love it" and therefore give it a 5.
