Mountain Hardwear Scrambler TRL 30 Day Pack - Acid Green Review
I've been using a flash 17 as my small climbing pack for a long time, but I never really liked it. It's cluttered with extraneous straps and pockets and just isn't big enough to carry a rack on the approach, or a pair of shoes, or water and extra clothing for two people being out all day. I kept trying to find something better, but there's so much expensive, overengineered stuff around. I carried the scrambler seconding for a friend on Cutthroat Peak last month immediately bought one of my own.In summary, this is a very comfortable 30L pack that's got a few, genuinely useful features but generally stays out of the way. On my body, a bit over six feet and narrow, the waist belt fits snuggly around level with my navel when I cinch the shoulder straps down, clearing the harness area and keeping the pack tight against my back. With the addition of a flexible, nonremovable framesheet and compression straps the whole thing is extremely stable and comfortable.
Apart from fit, it just hits every feature I need and none I don't. The side pockets are constructed of something durable enough to carry pickets, it's got gear loops and side compression straps, a rope strap under the hood, and single pocket in the lid. The only thing missing, it would be nice if there were a pocket in the main compartment for a bladder or guidebook.
This isn't a summit pack, it's too bulky and heavy for that. What it's good for are multipitch rock climbs, and although I haven't tested this yet, I would imagine it would be about right for single day routes on the cascade volcanoes in spring, or for backcountry skiing.
