I got myself a Julbo Hike with Falcon NXT lenses in the spring of 2011. I don't normally like to wear sunglasses, and can boast a very good vision, but being overly susceptible to bright light, I did some researching around and bought these. Ever since, I take them everywhere - driving to work or shopping, fishing (including ice fishing), cross-country skiing, hiking etc.The Falcon NXT is a superb all-around lens. It is rather expensive, doubling the overall price of the sunglasses if compared to some other Julbo lens, but very much worth the extra. Here is an overview of my experience with this lens:
1. Color. It is a brown lens, it takes a bit to get used to in the beginning, but once your eyes have adapted, I found the colors to be rendered vibrant, the contrast great, and detail perfect. The resulting hue has a relaxing effect on my eyes.
2. Impact resistance. Unlike mineral lenses, these are very light. However, I dropped the glasses on numerous occasions, and they survived, with barely any visible scratches. The polymer is developed by NXT Vision, they call the material Trivex, and apparently conforms to the ANSI Z87.1 standard.
3. Photochromic. The lens gets darker or lighter depending on conditions, and that happens quite fast. It also reacts to changes in visible light, which keeps the photochromatic functionality behind the windshield. For reference, I am able to stare at midday summer sun, as well as read in the subway, or drive at dusk with them on. They are graded 2 to 4, which does not make them clear in the darkness (Julbo grade 1).
4. Polarization. Essential when I am going fishing, on the road and in general, to remove all that haze and reflections. It also darkens the sky nicely, and allows to see other drivers better. I wish the CPL filter on my camera lens worked this well.
5. It also has anti-glare and grease-resistance treatment. Needless to say, it offers 100% UV protection, the eyes don't get tired or hurt. It does, however, fog in certain circumstances (e.g. temperature shock) - but it is more of a frame's job to prevent the fogging.
The Hike frame:
1. The construction is wide, but so is my face. Folks with normal to narrow faces may find this frame too large.
2. Good protection from stray light is offered by the wide side pieces. Again, fit is very important, this frame wraps my face and offers a wide viewing angle.
3. The earpiece won't let me wear baseball caps, but anything softer is fine. Also, don't expect the sunglasses to stay on your face when running - they will jump off, get a sportier frame. However, you can put a strap on the earpiece.
4. The material is quite solid, construction is solid too. As I mentioned earlier, the sunglasses survived quite a few falls. The finishing is attentive to detail. All as is to be expected, decent product made in France.
Overall, I would recommend this for travel, everyday outdoor use, and leisure activities. For anything physically intense, I'd go for a sportier frame. The lens is superb, and there are quite a few other NXT lenses from Julbo, each tailored to specific scenarios, so one should do a proper research before buying - after all, it is about protecting your eyes.
