Kelty Zenith 2 Person Tent Review

I picked this up at a local Target store for $60, but have not seen any reviews for it. It's not even listed on the Kelty website, so I suspect it's a "target" only model, which explains the heavier fiberglass poles and overall cheaper price when compared to similar 2 person Kelty tents. Many higher-end brands make cheaper version of some of their models exclusively for big box stores. Except for the lack of aluminum poles and a few small dimensional details, the design pretty much copies the Kelty Salida 2 tent ($160), which Backpacker Magazine just gave glowing reviews for.

If you replaced the poles and stakes with aluminum ones, you'd probably have a sub 4 lbs tent, but as is, it's not that heavy and it seems pretty well made with quality material and sealed seams. In this class of tents, you'll not get the heavy tarp-like floor, so use a footprint to help protect the floor. I've not had it in rain or cold mornings yet, but I'm tall enough for the head and foot of my sleeping bag to touch the walls, which could get wet due to condensation or wicking. If the fly had guy points at the bottom center part of the narrow walls it could mitigate that. Also, I plan on using this mostly as a solo kayak camping tent, but it would be a big snug for two average adults and not having a second entrance and vestibule would mean crawling over your partner if you had to relive yourself at night. (also a negative of the Salida 2 according to Backpacker Mag) But at this price range for a higher end brand that seems to retain that higher end quality, I can't complain that much...
